A police official said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation was launched by Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir police, 52 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF at Pethseer in Sopore late last night.

All the exit points were sealed and house-to-house searches launched. However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons at around 2345 hrs.

He said the security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter. “Two militants were killed during the exchange of fire in the morning,” he said.

Another militant was killed this afternoon, taking the death toll to three. “Incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, were recovered from the encounter site,” the official said, adding the operation is over.

Additional security forces remained deployed in the nearby areas to prevent any law and order problem.
