Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter on between militants and security forces in Kupwara forest

Srinagar, May 16 (UNI): A fierce encounter is on between militants and security forces in the forest areas in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara on Thursday.

Official sources said that following specific information about movement of militants, a joint cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, the Army and CRPF in the upper reaches of Kandi forests, Kupwara in north Kashmir.

When security forces were moving towards a particular area, the militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons.

''The security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter,'' the sources said.

Additional security forces have been rushed and the area has been sealed to foil any attempts by militants to escape.

The encounter was going on when the last reports came in.
