Jaffna spreading message of 'peace' to world: Modi
Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Mar 14 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Sri Lanka's Jaffna, and said the city is spreading message of 'peace' to the world.
"Jaffna is creating a new mark for itself by spreading message of peace to the world. India is proud to have an opportunity to establish a unique and world level cultural centre in Jaffna," Modi said after laying the foundation stone for the Jaffna Cultural Centre.
He said India and Sri Lanka not only share border but are also culturally linked.
"I assure you that the work we've started will be completed well in time and will be better than your imagination. I'm confident that the Talaimannar Railway project will give pace to the development of this area," said Modi, who is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka in 28 years.
Modi flew to Jaffna by an Indian Air Force chopper.
The Indian PM offered prayers at the Naguleswaram Temple in Jaffna.
"Offered prayers at the Naguleswaram Temple in Jaffna. Feeling blessed," Modi tweeted.
Earlier, he also offered prayers at the sacred Sri Maha Bodh tree on his arrival to this historic north-central city of Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a visit to Sri Lanka, on Saturday arrived in the historic north-central city of Anuradhapura on his way to Jaffna.
Modi, accompanied by Sri Lanka's President, Maithripala Sirisena,also stopped at the Buddhist temple.
Common belief is that the Sri Maha Bodhi tree grew from a sapling from the one under shich Buddha attained 'Bodhi' or theological truth following days of meditation.
Modi is only the second foreign leader after British Prime Minister David Cameron to visit the region, torn by decades of ethnic fighting.
On Friday, Modi called for greater economy for Sri Lanka's biggest minority community
He also handed over houses to 50,000 families that lost their homes in the fighting in Jaffna.
