Its a monumental tragedy: Derek O'Brien on under-construction flyover collapse

Kolkata, Mar 31 (IBNS) TMC MP Derek O'Brien on Thursday called the collapse of an under-construction flyover near Ganesh Talkies cinema hall in north Kolkata as a 'monumental tragedy'.

"Monumental tragedy. Rescue ops on.Many feared dead. Chief Sec/Home Sec at site. CM headed back to Kol immediately.This is the update I have," he tweeted.

  Several persons were killed and many others were injured on Thursday when a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed near Ganesh Talkies cinema hall in north Kolkata, reports said.

According to reports, a part of under-construction Vivekananda Flyover suddenly collapsed on the crossing of Rabindra Sarani and Vivekananda Road at around 12:30 pm.

According to locals, a huge number of vehicles and many people have been stuck under the collapsed flyover.

Police force, fire tenders and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel have reached the spot and started rescue operation.

Cranes have been called in to lift the collapsed concrete blocks. Central Police Force and Indian Army personnel have joined the rescue operation as well.
