Internet services resume in southern Assam; night curfew imposed

“Following drastic improvement in the situation in the past two days, the administration relaxed curfew from 7 am on Tuesday till midnight. Only night curfew will remain in force for another eight to nine

days,” Hailakandi district authorities said.

Internet services have resumed on Tuesday morning after it was suspended on Friday night following unrest in Hailakandi town earlier that day, which had resulted in death of one person and imposition of curfew in entire Hailakandi district.

Banks, markets, educational institutions and government offices opened up with public and private vehicles seen plying on the roads.

A grievously injured person during the clashes in Hailakandi and admitted at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) has undergone a successful operation and is stated to be out of danger.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Omar Sharif visited the SMCH to take stock of the health of the patients undergoing treatment there.

In an order issued today, Hailakandi administration has asked the officers and staff to report on time in their office following the improvement in the situation and directed them not to leave headquarters without the prior approval of the authorities, warning that any deviation will be viewed very seriously.

Meanwhile, the district administration has appealed to the people to maintain peace, communal harmony and brotherhood to defeat the sinister designs of certain elements trying to create a rift in society.

In a letter addressed to the members of the public, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said the crying need of the hour is to maintain peace and communal harmony 'as the district is going through a difficult phase' and to work towards lasting peace for ensuring all-round development.

Urging the people not to be swayed by emotions and not to believe what is being circulated in social media platforms, Jalli said, "I appeal to everyone to cross-check and verify the information with the district administration."

Appealing to the people to stand strong against forces trying to create a rift in society, Jalli said the administration has opened a control room with numbers 03844-223377/1077 and also a police control room with numbers 100/03844-222253/224595 for the public to report on any incident and also bring to their notice any objectionable post on social media.

The Deputy Commissioner assured the people that the miscreants who had triggered the violence in Hailakandi town on May 10 last will be brought to book and stringent action will be initiated against them as per provisions of law.
