Injustice to opposition MLAs: Atishi writes to Delhi Assembly Speaker on suspension of 21 AAP lawmakers

New Delhi/IBNS: Delhi Leader of Opposition Atishi has called the suspension of 21 out of 22 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs from the assembly "injustice" in a letter to Speaker Vijender Gupta, media reports said.

Atishi is one of the 21 MLAs who have been suspended by the Speaker following AAP's claim that Father of the Constitution BR Ambedkar's portrait was removed from the new Chief Minister's office.

Atishi wrote in the letter, "I am writing this letter with great pain and sorrow. The biggest strength of democracy is its fairness and equality. But whatever happened in the Delhi Assembly over the last few days is not only an injustice to the opposition MLAs, but also a severe blow to the democratic values.

"Our Constitution gives us the right to raise our voice in a democratic way. But how will democracy survive if the voice of the opposition is suppressed and the MLAs are prevented from raising people's questions inside and outside the House?"

The only AAP MLA who was not suspended was Okhla lawmaker Amanatullah Khan, who was not present at the assembly.

The motion for suspension was moved by Delhi minister Parvesh Verma.

The Delhi Assembly has also witnessed fierce faceoff between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and AAP after the government placed the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report over the alleged liquor scam involving former CM and AAP supremo, Arvind Kejriwal.

The BJP returned to power in Delhi after 27 years winning 48 out of 70 seats as opposed to AAP's 22 in the assembly elections, which were held on February 5.
