New Delhi/IBNS: India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Pieter Elbers, marking a significant leadership change for the company.

In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, the airline confirmed that Elbers had stepped down from his role and would be relieved from service with immediate effect.

The company stated that its Board of Directors took note of the resignation during a meeting held on March 10, 2026.

Following his departure, Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will assume interim responsibility for managing the airline’s affairs until further decisions are made regarding permanent leadership.

According to the filing, Elbers will cease to hold the position of CEO at the close of business hours on March 10.

Exit comes months after operational meltdown

Elbers’ resignation comes nearly three months after IndiGo experienced one of the most severe operational disruptions in its history.

The crisis left an estimated three lakh passengers stranded across various airports as hundreds of flights were affected.

The large-scale disruption triggered widespread criticism from passengers and raised concerns about the airline’s operational management.

The incident also attracted regulatory scrutiny.

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), later imposed penalties totalling ₹22.20 crore on IndiGo, along with additional actions aimed at addressing operational shortcomings.

The episode marked a major challenge for the airline, which had built a reputation for reliability and operational efficiency over the years.

Financial impact of the disruptions

The operational breakdown reportedly caused significant financial losses for the airline.

According to sources cited earlier, the crisis resulted in a financial setback estimated at around ₹2,000 crore.

Apart from financial damage, the disruptions also affected the airline’s brand image and raised concerns among industry observers about internal management and operational preparedness.

Elbers had been under sustained pressure following the crisis, which began in December last year and continued to have repercussions in the months that followed.

Elbers cites personal reasons

In his resignation letter addressed to Rahul Bhatia, Elbers said he was stepping down for personal reasons.

He also requested that the company waive his notice period.

In the letter, he reflected on his tenure at the airline and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the company.

“It has been both an honour and a privilege to serve as IndiGo’s CEO these past years,” Elbers wrote.

He added that he was proud to have been part of the airline’s growth journey and acknowledged the contributions of the wider IndiGo team.

Leadership tenure since 2022

Pieter Elbers took charge as Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo in September 2022.

His appointment came at a time when the airline was recovering from pandemic-related disruptions and seeking to expand its domestic and international network.

During his tenure, the airline pursued fleet expansion and network growth while strengthening its position as India’s largest carrier by market share.

However, the recent operational crisis placed his leadership under intense scrutiny and ultimately led to his decision to step down.

Rahul Bhatia takes interim charge

With Elbers’ departure, Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will now oversee the management of the airline’s affairs on an interim basis.

The company has not yet announced a timeline for appointing a new permanent CEO.

Bhatia, who is also a co-founder of IndiGo, has been closely associated with the airline’s strategic direction since its early days.

His interim leadership is expected to ensure continuity in operations as the company navigates the transition and addresses ongoing operational and regulatory challenges.
