An Indian-origin lawyer has been disbarred by the Barristers' Tribunal Service after his claims of studying at Oxford University were found to be false.

The lawyer was identified as 50-year-old Anurag Mohindru.

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) said an independent disciplinary tribunal ordered the lawyer to be disbarred after finding his 'professional misconduct'.

The tribunal, which commenced on September 8 and concluded on  September 12, found that  Mohindru had acted dishonestly by providing false information on his curriculum vitae during the course of an application to a chambers in 2012.

"In the CV he asserted he had studied biomedical science/medicine at Oxford University when he had not," read a statement issued by the Bar Standards Board.

The board said the tribunal found the behaviour was a serious breach of the standards expected of members of the Bar.

"Having found Mr M to have been dishonest, the panel decided that the appropriate sanction was to order his disbarment. He has been immediately suspended pending any appeal," the board said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Bar Standards Board said: “The public and profession should expect barristers to be honest when applying for positions within a chambers."

"Dishonesty such as this undermines the trust and confidence that the public places in barristers and in the profession as a whole. The tribunal’s decision to disbar Mr Mohindru reflects the seriousness of this misconduct and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Bar," the spokesperson said.

He also stepped down  as a Board Member of the  Essex County Cricket Club.

Confirming his decision, the club wrote in a statement: "He informed the Board of his decision at a meeting on Sunday."
