Indian businessman in Kuwait Mathunny Mathews passes away

Thiruvanthapuram, May 21 (IBNS): Indian businessman in Kuwait Mathunny Mathews has passed away, media reports said on Sunday.

Mathews was one of the people credited with the safe airlift evacuation of about 170,000 Indians from Kuwait during the 1990 Invasion of Kuwait, which is hailed as the world's largest civilian evacuation in history.

He was 81 when death came.

The businessman hailed from  Kumbanad in Pathnamthitta district of Kerala.

Mathews' was said to be the inspiration for superstar Akshay Kumar's hit Bollywood movie Airlift.

Akshay Kumar mourned the death of the businessman.

"Extremely sad news, was an honour to portray him onscreen. Thoughts and prayers with his family #RIPSunnyMathew," Akshay Kumar tweeted.
