Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal joins Bharatiya Janata Party

New Delhi/IBNS: India's badminton poster girl and sports icon Saina Nehwal on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Earlier, several eminent sports personalities, including former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, had joined the ruling party.

Saina Nehwal is an Olympic medal winner.

She won the Bronze medal in 2012 London Olympics.

She was the first Indian badminton player from India to win an Olympic medal.

Speaking to the media, she said: "I am joining a party which works a lot for people. Narendra Modi does a lot for the country and if I can contribute to the country's development with him then that will be a big thing. Narendra Modi has done a lot for the nation and development of sports."

"I am thankful to BJP for the honour and I hope to do something good for the country," she said.

"Narendra Modi inspires me a lot," she said.

Saina is currently preparing for the 2020 Olympic games.
