Indian Army secures patent for AI-powered automatic target classifying system

The Indian Army has been granted a patent for its in-house innovation, the Automatic Target Classifying System based on Artificial Intelligence, developed by Colonel Kuldeep Yadav.

This cutting-edge system leverages sensors and AI algorithms to autonomously identify and classify targets on radar, eliminating the need for human intervention.

The technology is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency in areas such as missile guidance and battlefield awareness.

Highlighting the achievement, the Army wrote on X on Thursday: “The innovation developed by Colonel Kuldeep Yadav reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering the spirit of innovation, strengthening technological self-reliance and promoting #Atmanirbharta in the defence domain.”

The system processes real-time data—including images and radar signals—by comparing it with a database of recorded information, enabling faster and more accurate target recognition compared to human operators.

Colonel Yadav has previously developed another AI-based solution, an AI-powered accident prevention system, which was granted a patent in July 2023.

That system focuses on road safety by detecting driver drowsiness and issuing real-time alerts to prevent fatigue-related accidents. Valid for 20 years, the patent underscored the role of AI in enhancing public safety.

Together, these innovations underscore the Indian Army’s broader emphasis on indigenous research, technological advancement, and the government’s Atma Nirbhar Bharat mission to achieve self-reliance in critical sectors.
