In a surprise, Mamata Banerjee meets Suvendu Adhikari in West Bengal assembly

Kolkata/IBNS: In a startling political scene in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday met the Leader of Opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and her staunch critic, Suvendu Adhikari, at her chamber in the state assembly.

While Mamata said she had called Suvendu for tea, the LoP called it a "courtesy meeting".

Suvendu was accompanied by BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul.

The meeting has raised eyebrows as the two have turned bitter rivals since the 2020 end when Suvendu dumped Mamata's Trinamool Congress (TMC) and switched to the BJP, which was aspiring to come to power.

Later, Mamata had unsuccessfully contested against Suvendu from Nandigram constituency where the Chief Minister had to bite the dust by over 1,900 votes though TMC stormed back to power.

Mamata had then knocked on the doors of the court alleging irregularities in vote counting that they cite as the reason behind Suvendu's win.

Earlier this week, Suvendu had lashed out at the TMC government over the allotment of his seat during the swearing-in ceremony of Governor CA Ananda Bose.

The LoP had boycotted the ceremony.

Following the 2021 assembly elections, several turncoats including Mamata's former trusted lieutenant Mukul Roy headed back to the ruling party.
