Imran Khan writes to PM Modi, offers talks over Kashmir, terrorism

Islamabad/New Delhi, Jun 8 (IBNS): Amid a strenuous relationship between the two nations, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has offered talks to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi over the issues of Kashmir and terrorism, media reports said.

Writing a letter to Modi, Khan urged the Prime Minister to shred all differences to settle the dispute between the two countries. The Pakistan Prime Minister said talks was the only option to overcome the poverty of people from both the countries.

India is yet to react to the offer. Earlier, India had refused to hold any discussion stating cross-border terrorism must stop first.

Khan's offer came amid reports claiming there will be no meeting between the two Prime Ministers on the sidelines of a regional summit in Kyrgyzstan next week.

The Pakistan Prime Minister had earlier congratulated Modi for registering a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls to return to power for the second term.

The relationship between the two nations deteriorated after the Feb 14 Pulwama terror attack, which was carried out by Pakistan-based militant organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

Following the terror attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) had carried out an airstrike in Balakote in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Later, Pakistan also claimed it had retaliated. The tension between the two nations grew after IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was shot down and captured by Pakistan.

Amid global pressure, Varthaman was returned to India.

However, talks about a meeting between Modi and Khan are gaining momentum at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
