Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls: Voting ends
Shimla: Voting across 68 seats to elect a new Assembly in Himachal Pradesh ended at 5 pm on Saturday.
The highest voter turnout in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday was recorded at Mandi, the home district of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.
EC data showed that Bilaspur recorded a 34.05 per cent turnout, Chamba 28.35 per cent, Hamirpur 35.86 per cent, Kangra 35.50 per cent, Kinnaur 35.00 per cent, Kullu 40.33 per cent, Lahaul and Spiti 21.95 per cent, Mandi 41.17 per cent, Shimla 37.30 per cent, Sirmour 41.89 per cent, Solan 37.90 per cent and Una 39.93 per cent till 1300 hrs.
Around 55 lakh voters will decide the fate of 412 candidates in this single phase election in Himachal Pradesh.
Result will be declared on Dec 8.
The BJP is in power in the state under the leadership of Jairam Thakur, the current chief minister of the state.
The party has 44 MLAs in the 68-seat Himachal Assembly, while the Congress has 21 MLAs. Two MLAs are Independents and the CPM has one seat.
No incumbent government has returned to power in Himachal Pradesh for a second consecutive term since 1982.
The challenge for the ruling BJP is to buck the anti-incumbency factor and overturn the convention. The Congress is banking on the voters to go with the four-decade-old trend in the state.
