Haryana : Murathal mass rapes did take place, HC says, directs police to bring culprits to justice

Chandigarh, Jan 20 (IBNS) : Punjab and Haryana High Court have observed that rapes did take place in Murthal during the February 2016 Jat agitation in Haryana and asked the state police to find the culprits, reports said.

The court on Thursday observed that two witnesses had said that women were dragged out of their vehicles, which indicated that rapes had taken place.

The court  asked the CBI counsel if the agency was ready to probe the case.

It also asked the state police's special investigation team to  file an affidavit before the trial court that rape charges hadn't been dropped and were still under investigation.

The Haryana Government had all along denied mass rapes having taken place, saying no direct evidence was available in support of the allegation.

The high court observed that  the undergarments recovered from the site, the semen samples from the site and the two witnesses who saw people being dragged out from cars and other private vehicles directly point to such incidents having taken place.
