Haridwar hate speech: Supreme Court asks Uttarakhand govt to reply in 10 days
New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Uttarakhand government to reply to a petition on the alleged hate speech at a religious event in the hill state within 10 days, media reports said.
The top court has asked the petitioners, former Patna High Court judge Anjana Prakash and journalist Qurban Ali, to approach the local authorities with a request to stop another such religious event scheduled to be held on Jan 23.
Triggering a massive row, calls for "ethnic cleansing" were given by religious leaders in Delhi and Haridwar at 'Dharma Sansad' events held in December.
In one of the videos, a religious leader named Sadhvi Annapurna, was heard saying,"If you want to finish them off, then kill them... We need 100 soldiers who can kill 20 lakh of them to win this."
Top lawyers of the Supreme Court had appealed to Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana to take suo moto cognizance of the calls which were given at the event.
In a letter to the CJI, the top lawyers have listed the names of the people who gave the hate speech targeting the Muslim community along with a few links related to the incident.
Eminent lawyers Dushyant Dave, Prashant Bhushan, Vrinda Grover, Salman Khurshid were among the signatories of the letter.
