Hardik Patel detained in Surat for trying to take out protest march

Surat, Sept 19 (IBNS) Hardik Patel, the 22-year-old leader of Gujarat's Patel community, has been detained in Surat while trying to take out a protest march on Saturday morning, reports said.

About 50 of his supporters have also been arrested.

The Gujarat government had denied him permission for his "Ekta Yatra", but Hardik, who has been spearheading the Patels' agitation for job reservation, decided to go ahead with his programme.

Since early morning,  tight security was arranged at the Mangadh Chowk in Surat where Hardik and his supporters had planned to gather.

"We will request the people of Gujarat to support our cause. We are not against any community. We are just fighting to get reservation for our community," Hardik had told reporters on Friday.

In the past two weeks, Hardik had twice announced to take out the "reverse Dandi March", but he had to cancel  the plan after the district administration denied permission.
