New Delhi, Jan 11 (IBNS): A special Haryana court on Friday convicted tainted spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of murdering a journalist, said reports.

The chief of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect was found guilty in the 2002 murder of a journalist named Ram Chander Chhatarpati.

His sentencing will take place on Jan 17.

The journalist was shot in Oct 2002 after his newspaper published an anonymous letter mentioning how women were being sexually exploited at Ram Rahim's den.

On Aug 25, 2017, Ram Rahim was convicted in rape cases of two women on the Dera premises in Sirsa.

The conviction of the Dera chief was followed by massive violence by his followers.

He is currently serving a 20-year jail term.
