Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani resigned as the Chief Minister of the state on Saturday, just a year ahead of the Assembly polls in the politically crucial state.

"I am thankful to the party that I was assigned the task of serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat," Rupani told reporters.

"Under the leadership of PM Modi, Gujarat has touched all fronts of development. I am thankful to the PM for giving me an opportunity to develop Gujarat during my term of five years." he said.

"I feel the development of the state should now go on under the guidance of PM Modi and a new leadership. Hence, I have resigned today," he said.

He said he is now ready to perform whichever task is given to him by the party.

Gujarat is the homestate of PM Narendra Modi.
