Gig workers observe nationwide strike over fuel prices, low wages

Mumbai/IBNS: Gig workers across India are observing a five-hour nationwide strike on Saturday protesting against soaring fuel prices, stagnant wages and lack of social security benefits, media reports said.

The strike was called by the Gig and Platform Services Workers Union (GIPSWU), which appealed to app-based drivers and delivery workers to temporarily shut down services between 12 noon and 5 pm.

In a post on X, the union said, “Rising petrol, diesel & LPG prices are directly affecting gig workers across India. GIPSWU demands fair per-kilometre rates for delivery workers & drivers. Appeal for temporary app shutdown tomorrow from 12 PM to 5 PM.”

Main reasons behind the strike

  • Rising fuel prices: Workers said increasing petrol and diesel prices have severely impacted their earnings. Petrol prices reportedly rose by nearly Rs 3 per litre in several cities.
  • Low and stagnant pay rates: Delivery executives and cab drivers alleged that app-based companies have not revised fares or incentives despite rising fuel and vehicle maintenance costs.
  • Demand for minimum fare structure: Worker unions have demanded a minimum payout of Rs 20 per kilometre to make rides and deliveries financially sustainable.
  • Pressure from quick-delivery models: Gig workers have repeatedly objected to ultra-fast delivery systems, arguing that they encourage unsafe driving and place workers under extreme pressure.
  • Lack of social security: Protesters said gig workers still lack insurance, healthcare, pension, paid leave and other labour protections despite the rapid expansion of India’s gig economy.
  • Opaque app policies: Workers also raised concerns over sudden account suspensions, unfair rating systems and frequent changes in incentive structures by platform companies.
  • Income insecurity: Several unions and reports claimed that after fuel, maintenance and commission deductions, many gig workers are left with unsustainable earnings.

The strike is expected to affect app-based taxi and delivery services linked to companies such as Uber, Ola, Swiggy, Zomato and Blinkit in several cities.
