GI tag says West Bengal is where the 'rosogolla' originated
Kolkata, Nov 14 (IBNS): West Bengal finally got the geographical indication (GI) tag for its ever-popular sweet, the 'rosogolla' (also called rasgulla) beating Odisha's claim as the place from where the sweet originated, according to media reports on Tuesday.
Tweeted Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, "Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla."
“The GI authorities have ruled today that West Bengal is the origin of rosogolla. It has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location, or community or society," the Hindustan Timesin their report quoted Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of patents and designs in Kolkata, as saying.
The Chennai-based GI registration office awarded the GI tag to Bengal thus putting to rest the nearly two-year debate between neighbouring states West Bengal and Odisha regarding the place of origin of this sweet sphere.
Odisha had claimed that the sweet originated in the Jagannath Temple of Puri and has been around since the 12th century.
Bengal claimed that the sweet developed by Nobind Chandra Das in 1860 is the original and different from the sweet that Odisha was claiming as the original sweet, media reported.
