Chennai/Ladhakh: Lt Rekha Singh, the wife of Naik Deepak Singh, who was martyred in the Galwan Valley conflict with Chinese troops in June 2020, was commissioned into the Indian Army on Saturday and posted to a frontline unit in Eastern Ladakh as an officer.

Following her completion of training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, 29-year-old Rekha Singh has been posted to a frontline unit in eastern Ladakh with the Army Ordnance Corps, according to officials.

According to officials, Lt Rekha Singh, whose husband Naik Deepak Singh, who was from the Army Medical Corps, was posthumously awarded Vir Chakra in 2021 for his bravery and indomitable courage in providing medical assistance to injured soldiers during the clashes.

He was attached to the 16th Battalion of Bihar Regiment.

In the Galwan Valley clash on June 15, 2020, 20 Indian Army personnel were martyred while on duty in fierce hand-to-hand combat in eastern Ladakh. This incident was the most serious military conflict between India and China in decades.

According to his Vir Chakra citation, he played a pivotal role in rendering treatment and saving the lives of more than 30 Indian soldiers.
