From domestic help to Bengal minister: Kalita Majhi’s extraordinary rise to power
Kalita Majhi, who once worked as a domestic help to support her family, has taken another major step in her political journey after being sworn in as a Minister of State in the West Bengal government.
Her elevation from a grassroots worker to a member of the state cabinet highlights one of the most remarkable political success stories to emerge from the recent Assembly elections.
Majhi, who represents the Ausgram Assembly constituency in Purba Bardhaman district, was among the ministers inducted during the latest cabinet expansion.
Her appointment comes shortly after her victory in the Assembly polls, where she secured a decisive win in a constituency reserved for the Scheduled Castes.
From household work to public service
Before entering the political spotlight, Majhi worked as a domestic help in multiple households while managing family responsibilities.
Living in Majhpukur Para under Guskara Municipality, she supported her family alongside her husband, Subrata Majhi, who works as a plumber.
Their son is currently pursuing his studies after appearing for Class 12 examinations.
Financial hardship forced Majhi to discontinue her formal education at an early stage.

To help sustain her family, she took up domestic work, earning a modest monthly income while navigating everyday challenges faced by many working-class families.
Her experiences during those years, she has said, helped her understand the concerns of ordinary people and the difficulties faced by economically weaker sections of society.

Political journey began at grassroots
Majhi entered active politics more than a decade ago and steadily worked her way up through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Beginning as a booth-level worker, she remained involved in organisational activities and grassroots mobilisation.
Her political career gained wider attention when the BJP fielded her as its candidate from Ausgram during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
