Four Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Madurai, Nov 29 (IBNS): At least four Indian fishermen from a village in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Friday, media reports said.

The fishermen were held after they reportedly strayed into Lankan waters.

Sources in the fisheries department said the four fishermen belonged to Pushpavanam village. They had gone missing after they ventured out for fishing on Thursday.

They had strayed into Sri Lankan waters due to a rough sea. Later, they were rescued by their Lankan counterparts and then handed over to the Sri Lankan Navy.

The fishermen have been remanded in judicial custody, reports said.

On Sunday, the Sri Lankan Navy had also arrested 14 Tamil Nadu fishermen near Jaffna Peninsula on charges of poaching in Lankan waters. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam sought the Centre’s intervention into the matter.
