Former Union Minister Bijoykrishna Handique passes away

Guwahati, July 26 (IBNS) : Veteran politician of Assam and former Union Minister Bijoykrishna Handique died at a hospital in Jorhat on Sunday.

81-year-old Handique was admitted at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on Saturday with heart problems and shifted to ICU. He died on Sunday at around 12:30 pm.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Anjan Dutta have paid their homage to the veteran politician.

Handique was the minister for Mines and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in the UPA-II government.

The senior politician was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jorhat constituency for six consecutive terms since 1991.

Born in 1934, Handique was first elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1972 and also was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.

He was also the Union Minister of State for Defence, Parliamentary Affairs, Mines, Chemicals and Fertilizer during the tenure of the UPA-I government.

He was the only son of scholar Krishnakanta Handique.
