Former TERI chief RK Pachauri dies at 79

New Delhi/UNI/IBNS: Former The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) chief RK Pachauri died at a private hospital here on Thursday. He was 79.

Pachauri was admitted to the Escorts Heart Institute in the national capital after a prolonged cardiac ailment.

"It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing away of Dr RK Pachauri, the Founder Director of TERI. The entire TERI family stands with the family of Dr Pachauri in this hour of grief," TERI said in a tweet.

According to sources, he was suffering from cardiac issues and had an open heart surgery but was put on ventilator on Tuesday.

Pachauri was put on life support on Tuesday and had undergone an open heart surgery at the hospital.

In 2015, Pachauri was accused of allegedly sexually harassing a woman colleague after which he quit the post.

Pachauri, a former chairman of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), had undergone an open heart surgery after suffering a stroke in Mexico last year. 

It was under his leadership, the IPCC had won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with former US vice-president Al Gore.
