Kolkata/IBNS: In a jolt to the grand old party, Goa lawmaker Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Tuesday joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a day after deserting the Congress.

Lourenco joined the party in presence of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who is also the West Bengal Chief Minister.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was also present during Lourenco's joining.

Welcoming Lourenco, a three-time MLA, to her partyfold, Banerjee tweeted, "I extend a warm welcome to Goa Assembly’s best performing MLA, @ReginaldoGoa ji to the @AITC4Goa family. Well-intended individuals like him, whose foremost priority has been the interest of the people, strengthen our spirit in this fight against divisive forces!"

Lourenco, who quit the Congress on Monday morning, flew to Kolkata in the evening on the same day.

The TMC, which is aiming to expand its base outside West Bengal, has inducted several Congress MLAs to the party recently.

Recently, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee had visited the state to mobilise its workers.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra has been made the party’s Goa in-charge to bolster the campaign against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Goa will go to polls in early 2022.
