Kolkata, Mar 9 (IBNS): India and Bangladesh on Friday jointly inaugurated a first of its kind 'crime free zone' for a stretch of 8.3 km along the international border in West Bengal. Border Security Force DG K K Sharma and Border Guards Bangladesh DG Maj Gen. Abul  Hossain jointly inaugurated the 'Crime free zone' at Kalyani BOP near Petrapole in South 24 Parganas in West Bengal.

The 8.3 km 'crime free zone' stretches between BSF border posts at Gunarmath and Kalyani and the BGB posts at Putkhali and Daulatpur.

Speaking on the occasion,K K Sharma, DG, BSF, said, border guarding forces of both the countries with cooperation from local administration, police, local populace and NGOs working in this area will work towards the goal of securing a crime free zone in this stretch.

For this purpose of curbing trans-border crimes, BSF and BGB has installed advanced technology devices like Hand held thermal reactors, thermal imagers etc.

Speed boats have also been deployed along the riverine border. This apart, BSF is implementing many welfare schemes for border population.

BGB DG Maj Gen Abul Hossain stated that both the border guarding forces are committed towards defeating common enemies at the border like drug dealers, human trafficking, smugglers, terrorists and so on. He reiterated that criminal and anti-social activities can be prevented by taking local population into confidence.

The dignitaries present on the occasion included M.P. from Bangladesh Sk. Afiluddin.

It may be mentioned that joint inauguration of this 'crime free zone', decided upon during DG level talks held between BSF and BGB at New Delhi on October 2017 is a step towards taking Indo-Bangla friendship to new heights.
