Firm in our commitment to stand by farmers on MSP: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said her party was firm in its commitment to stand by farmers on multiple issues including the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Speaking at the Congress' parliamentary party meeting, Gandhi said, "We are firm in our commitment to stand by farmers in their demands for legally-guaranteed MSP, remunerative prices that meet costs of cultivation, and compensation to the bereaved families."

"Farmers' organizations have been strongly opposing these laws for the last 13 months through the movement. Congress along with other opposition parties pressured to abolish them. Farmers' solidarity and perseverance has forced an arrogant government to bow down," she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month apologised to the country and rolled back the new farm laws that had triggered massive protests in and around Delhi.

The government on Tuesday said it was ready to give a written guarantee of the MSP.

Now the farmers will consider the offer and if they agree to the government, the 13-month long protest may soon come to an end.

The farm laws, which have now been rolled back, would have helped the farmers to sell their produce beyond the government regulated wholesale markets. a

However, the protesting farmers fear that they would be usurped by the private players with the gradual destabilisation of the wholesale markets.
