New Delhi, Mar 19 (IBNS) Vice President M. Hamid Ansari on Saturday said that the examples of editorial daring and demonstrating the high professional and ethical standards are now few and far between.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the Seminar on the 'Role of Editors in Today's Media' organized by Rajya Sabha Television, here today.

The Vice President said that the editor holds the key to forming public perception and by extension public opinion and thereby set the agenda for the national debate.

There was a time, not long ago, when newspaper editors were intellectual stalwarts who acted as the brain trust of the country, he added.

The Vice President further said that to uphold journalistic ethos and values, an editor must ensure that the content is accurate and relevant; be impartial and independent and be fair and respectful.

The Vice President said that over the years there has been a change in the role and the position of the editor.

He further said that the lines between an editorial and an advertisement should be drawn in bold. The digital medium today provides space for independent thought and contrarian views, he added.
