Ex-Maldives Prez detained on ship off Indian Coast, MEA says proper travel documents were missing

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IBNS): Former vice-president of the Maldives Ahmed Adeeb was on Thursday prohibited from entering India by intelligence agency officials off the coast of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

Responding to the action, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that he was not permitted entry via ship because he did not have the proper travel documents.

"There are designated entry points through which foreigners are allowed entry into India. The entry is facilitated on the basis of appropriate valid travel documents. In the instant case, since he was not entering India through a designated entry point and did not possess the valid document, he has not been permitted entry into India," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

Ahmed Adeeb's ship was intercepted by officials mid-sea after a tip-off.

He was detained on board and not permitted to enter India.

Ahmed Adeeb, 37, became the youngest vice-president of Maldives in 2015.

However, he was sacked the same year after being arrested in connection with a bomb attack, which targeted the then president Abdullah Yameen.

Adeeb was released from jail in May after his conviction was overturned,.

He still faces corruption charges in a separate trial.
