Ex-Karnataka minister Vaijnath Patil quits Congress, to support BJP candidate
Kalaburagi, Karnataka, Mar 11 (UNI): As dates for polling for general elections were announced, Congress, the coalition partner with JDS in Karnataka, suffered a setback with former minister and Hyderabad-Karnataka Horata Samiti president Vaijnath Patil tendering his resignation from the primary membership of Congress party and deciding to support the BJP candidate.
Confirming his move to UNI, Mr Patil on Sunday said that he had already sent his resignation letter to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Dinesh Gundurao on March 8. He alleged that the Coalition government in the state had not implemented Article 371 (J) in true spirit and funds were not fully released for the Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board (HKRDB).
Stating that he would support the BJP candidate in the Lok Saha election, Mr Patil alleged: "Congress deceived the people of the region as it did not want full implementation of the special status accorded to the region by amending the Constitution and introducing Article 371 (J)."
Mr Patil had represented Chincholi constituency twice in the Legislative Assembly and also served as a minister in H.D. Deve Gowda’s Cabinet. He had contested against former Chief Minister late N.Dharam Singh in 1980 Lok Sabha election as a Janata Party candidate and was defeated by over one lakh votes.
