New Delhi, Feb 21 (IBNS): With few weeks to go for the General Elections, Lieutenant General Deependra Singh Hooda (retired), who was the North Army Commander during the surgical strike carried out by the Narendra Modi government after the Uri attack in 2016, will be heading a task force of the Congress party on national security.

Gen. Hooda met Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday.

The Congress tweeted a couple of pictures stating, "Congress President @RahulGandhi met with Lt Gen DS Hooda (retd) to institute a task force on National Security which will prepare a vision paper for the country. Gen Hooda will lead the task force & work with a select group of experts."

In his 40-year career, Gen. Hooda served on both the northern and eastern borders of the country.

Uri attack:

The surgical strike was conducted by Indian Army on Sept 29, 2016.

The events goes back to Sept 18, 2016, when 19 soldiers were killed in an early morning attack by Pakistani terrorists.

The attack was carried out at the 12 Infantry Brigade headquarters in Uri.

On Sept 29, Indian Army's Special Forces conducted “surgical strikes” on terror launch pads across Line of Control (LoC), winning appreciations from countrymen.

Gen. Hooda joins Congress amid its tussle with BJP:

The ex-Army General joined the Congress on a day the opposition party launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly shooting for a film in Jim Corbett National Park when several army men were attacked by Pakistan-based militant organisation Jaish-e-Mphammed (JeM) in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack, which took place last week, left over 40 paramilitary personnel martyred.

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala even presented some pictures where Modi was allegedly shooting.
