DRI seizes over 12.5 kgs gold valued at Rs 4.4 Cr in Kolkata and Siliguri, 7 people arrested

Siliguri/Kolkata, Jul 27 (UNI) In a drive against gold smuggling syndicates, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has booked two cases on consecutive days in Kolkata and Siliguri and seized around 12.5 kgs of foreign origin gold valued at Rs 4.44 crores, the central agency said today.

In the first case in Kolkata, 3 persons - Sujit Rakshit, Sanjib Rakshit and Milan Swarnakar - were intercepted at Kaikhali on VIP Road travelling on a state-owned bus routed from Bagdah to Howrah via Bongaon. Around 6.5 kgs gold was found concealed in specially made “waist belts” worn by the three persons.

During interrogation, they have admitted that the gold was smuggled through Bangladesh border at Bongaon and meant to be delivered to a person in Kolkata. All three were arrested and produced before the CMM Court on Friday.

In the second case, which was booked by DRI officers in Siliguri in the early hours on Saturday four persons, including a lady, named Bapi Bairagi, Nuton Boiragi, Ashim Singha and Kumkum Singha were intercepted it New Jalpaiguri Railway Station travelling onboard Howrah bound train- Saraighat Express- from Guwahati. On interrogation 36 pieces of gold of foreign origin weighing almost 6Kgs were recovered and seized from their possession.

All four persons are being arrested and produced before the Court.

With the present seizure, in the current financial year, about 62 kgs of gold have already been seized.
