“Didi, you have not lost”: Akhilesh Yadav meets Mamata Banerjee after TMC’s Bengal defeat

Kolkata: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav visited Kolkata on Thursday to meet Mamata Banerjee following the All India Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

The meeting, held at Banerjee’s Kalighat residence, lasted for more than an hour and was attended by TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Yadav met Banerjee as the Trinamool Congress faces mounting political pressure after losing power in West Bengal following 15 years in office.

According to TMC sources, Yadav told Mamata Banerjee, “Didi, you have not lost,” ANI reported.

He also praised the party’s campaign efforts during the meeting, telling Abhishek Banerjee, “What a commendable battle you all have fought.”

“I came here to tell Didi that she has not lost. The way she fought against the might of the central government and their machinery is an inspiration,” Yadav told reporters after the meeting.

He emphasised that despite the seat count, the political battle for the “soul of democracy” continues.

Sources said the leaders discussed the political situation following the election results and issues related to coordination among opposition parties.

No official statement was issued immediately after the meeting.

Yadav’s visit comes as several INDIA bloc parties review their electoral strategies following the Bengal results.

The meeting also comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory with 207 seats in the 293-member assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark and ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state.
