Demonetisation: Man dies in Bengal ATM queue

Kolkata/Hooghly, Dec 3 (IBNS): A middle-aged man died while standing in an ATM queue near Bandel railway station in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Saturday morning.

The man, who has been identified as Kallol Ray Chowdhury, had been standing in ATM queue to debit money, while returning from Cooch Behar in north Bengal.

According to police, he suddenly fell on the ground due to a cardiac arrest and died in few minutes.

Exposing inhumanity, nobody in the queue either helped the man, who was a resident of Kolkata's Behala area, or took him to the hospital, resulting in death on the spot without any treatment.

Few hours later, police rescued him and rushed the man to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Following the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her anger on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"Unfortunate death toll continues... This morning Kallol Roy Chowdhury collapsed and died in front of SBI ATM at Bandel station," she tweeted.

"My condolences to the bereaved family. Is Modi babu listening?" Banerjee further tweeted, hitting out Narendra Modi over demonetisation issue.

Earlier on Friday, two elderly men died standing in bank queues to withdraw money at Maslandapur and Raidighi areas in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts respectively.

The Centre on Nov 8 announced banning of old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes.
