Delhi’s next CM likely to be announced tomorrow in key BJP meet

Delhi: The suspense over Delhi's next chief minister is expected to end on Monday, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scheduled to hold its legislative party meeting at 3 pm, ANI reported, citing sources.

BJP spokesperson Ajay Alok had earlier stated, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is returning (from his foreign visit) by tonight. There will be a meeting of our parliamentary board tomorrow or the day after. Delhi's new CM will be before you."

The BJP secured a decisive victory in the Delhi assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats and displacing the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power after a decade.

AAP, which managed to secure only 22 seats in the fiercely contested polls, saw several key leaders, including former CM Arvind Kejriwal, lose their strongholds.

However, outgoing CM Atishi retained her seat.

Meanwhile, the Congress, which governed Delhi for 15 years (1998-2013), continued its decline, failing to win a single seat.

BJP to appoint observers for CM selection

As part of the process to finalise Delhi's new chief minister, the BJP is set to appoint observers to engage with newly elected party MLAs.

Among the potential candidates, Parvesh Verma—who defeated Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat—along with former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay, are being considered as frontrunners.

However, a senior BJP leader told PTI that the party leadership could also introduce a fresh face for the role.

"You never know... The national leadership can come up with an altogether fresh face who fits the bill and is capable of discharging the duties as Delhi chief minister amid high expectations of the people," the leader said.
