Delhi violence: West Bengal 'closely' monitoring situation, warns police force
Kolkata/IBNS: When a part of North-East Delhi is burning due to a violent clash between anti and pro CAA protesters, the West Bengal government on Tuesday warned its administrative and police officials to take all necessary preventive measures to avoid any untoward incident over CAA protests in the state.
According to sources, all police commissioners and superintendents, and magistrates have been directed to monitor all anti and pro CAA campaigns happening across the state and to take necessary action whenever required.
"Police officials have been asked to stay in touch with the leaders of all political parties and religious outfits which are involved in CAA related activities," a source in Bengal police told IBNS.
"Officials have been directed to disallow unauthorized and suspicious gathers and to take strict action before the situation goes out of control," he said.
The official said that all intelligence units in the state had been activated while few locations in some districts, which witnessed violence over CAA protests in December last year, are under police scanner.
"We have especially warned Kolkata Police to avoid any tense situation in the heart of the state," the official added. "Our message is very clear - we don't want any untoward incident in West Bengal."
Meanwhile, while leaving for Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concern over the ongoing violence in North-East Delhi.
"I am monitoring Delhi situation very closely and we are concerned about the violence," Mamata Banerjee told journalists at Kolkata airport.
"India is a peaceful and secular country, and there is no space for any violence in the nation," Banerjee said. "We should maintain peace and stay united together, always."
Since Sunday late night, a large area of North-East Delhi has been witnessing a large-scale violence due to a deadly clash between anti and pro CAA protesters which has already claimed lives of at least nine civilians and a cop.
More than 4,000 policemen, including CRPF and RAF personnel, have been deployed to the vulnerable locations to bring the situation under control.
