Delhi landfills threatened by fire
New Delhi, Apr 21 (IBNS) Fire tenders had to be rushed to Bhalswa landfill in north west Delhi on Thursday as a fire swept the area in the morning, according to media reports.
Commissioned in 1994, the garbage dump is spread over 21 acres and receives about 2,700 tonnes of garbage from areas such as Civil Lines, Jahangirpuri, Model Town, Kirti Nagar, etc.
According to officials, the fire has been caused by the soaring temperature.
Over the past few weeks, landfills in Delhi have faced several fire threats, which has proved to be a health hazard to citizens, according to reports.
Mumbai's Deonar garbage dump also saw several fires early this year but according to latest reports, the police have arrested nine scrap dealers on April 16 who are being held responsible for the fires.
