Delhi Govt formation: SC adjourns hearing, AAP disappointed
New Delhi, Oct 30 (IBNS): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was left disappointed, as the Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned a hearing on their petition seeking dissolution of the Delhi assembly, media reported.
Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP approached the top court seeking fresh elections in Delhi, which has been under President’s rule for the last eight months following resignation of Chief Minister Kejriwal and his entire cabinet.
The Supreme Court’s adjournment came at the wake of Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung’s decision on Wednesday to invite political parties to explore possibility of government formation in Delhi, a day after Supreme Court's rap over delay in taking a decision on the issue.
Najeeb is learnt to have taken the initiative after being rapped by the top court on Tuesday.
During an earlier hearing on Tuesday, SC criticized the Lt. Governor and the Centre for the stalemate in Delhi Assembly.
During hearing, a five-judge bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu criticized the Lieutenant Governor and the Centre and said, "In a democracy, President's Rule cannot go on forever. The Lieutenant Governor should have taken a decision on government formation at the earliest instead of waiting for months."
During which the Centre informed the Supreme Court that President Pranab Mukherjee had accepted a proposal by the LG to invite the BJP to take a shot at the power in Delhi.
Centre told the apex court that President agreed that the possibility of a "popular government" should be explored in the capital.
Soon after that, Jung met Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday morning after the former returned from a foreign trip on Tuesday night.
The two were reported to have held consultations, where Lt Governor has reportedly apprised Rajnath of his move to call the parties before taking a final decision on ending the political uncertainty in Delhi.
Najeeb Jung later said that he will begin talks with various parties over the next few days.
After this development, expressing satisfaction during Thursday hearing, the SC bench said, "The Lieutenant Governor has taken positive moves to explore government formation. Sometimes, it may be possible to form government with minority support."
Reacting to Supreme Court’s remarks, AAP leader Prashant Bhushan said by next week, it should be made clear to the court whether Delhi can have a government or elections should be announced. "It's ok if they want one last opportunity to explore government formation," he said.
It has been learnt that BJP may nominate Jagdish Mukhi to hold talks with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Delhi government formation.
