Delhi BJP welcomes Centre's decision on regularisation of 1,797 unauthorised colonies
New Delhi/UNI: Delhi BJP on Wednesday welcomed the Centre's announcement on regularisation of 1,797 unauthorised colonies in the capital.
"BJP is always standing with the people of Delhi. Today Modi ji gave ownership to 40 lakh people living in unauthorized colonies of Delhi as a Diwali gift. Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari MP expressed happiness by playing drums in the state party office," Manoj Tiwari's office said in a tweet.
In a move ahead of Delhi assembly polls, the Union Cabinet, in its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday decided to confer ownership rights on 40 lakh people living in the national capital's unauthorised colonies spread over 175 sq kms.
While briefing mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar described it as "a historic decision" to give ownership rights to people living in these unauthorised colonies.
Union Minister of State for Urban Development Hardeep Singh Puri said it was the "most far-sighted and revolutionary decision."
“The decision is applicable to 1,797 identified unauthorised colonies which are inhabitated by lower income group society. The decision does not apply to 69 affluent colonies identified by Delhi Development Authority, including Sainik Farms, Mahendru Enclave and Anant Ram Dairy,” Puri said.
He added that the ownership rights will be given on payment of nominal charge based on carpet area and plot size.
The decision will address major issues being faced by the residents of these colonies like lack of ownership, provision of basic infrastructure and civic amenities like sewerage system, parks and roads.
Meanwhile, in a tweet, the Union Minister of State for Urban Development said: "Government (the Centre) will introduce a Bill in the next Parliament Session to recognise the last transaction based on certain papers and give major exemption from Stamp Duty & Income Tax liabilities to the residents."
The winter session of Parliament will be held between November 18 and December 13 and the elections to the 70-member Delhi assembly are due by February 2020.
