New Delhi/IBNS: As part of a four-point action plan to address overcrowding and congestion in Delhi airport’s Terminal 3, the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) ordered the demolition of the VIP lounge to allow the entry of more passengers in the security checkout area.

The other measures include increasing the number of X-Ray screening systems from 14 to 18 to ensure passengers don’t have to stand in long queues.

According to an India Today report, hectic work is currently underway to prepare the site for passengers’ entry.

Further, the number of Automatic Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRs) from 13 to 17.

GMR Group Managing Director K Narayana Rao has said the situation at the Terminal 3 would be normalised by the end of December.

He cited passenger load factor has gone up per aircraft and the increased number of bags as the cause for overcrowding at the terminal.

On December 12, Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also made a surprise visit to the airport and spoke to the stakeholders, and issued directions.

The other measures include digital display boards at each entry gate displaying the wait time, crowd managers and ushers to guide flyers and an increase in manpower at the security checkpoints, said the report.
