Delay in CBI selection panel meet may rule out Rina Mitra from the top job
New Delhi, Jan 30 (IBNS): Delay in the CBI selection panel meet may eventually leave Rina Mitra, a special secretary (internal security) in the Union home ministry, out of contention for the top job in the federal probe agency, media reports said.
Mitra is scheduled to retire on Jan 31.
Rina Mitra, a special secretary (internal security) in the Union home ministry, will be out of contention for the top job at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the selection committee does not meet in the next two days as she is set to retire on January 31, people familiar with the development told Hindustan Times.
Mitra is a Madhya Pradesh-cadre Indian Police Service officer (IPS) of the 1983 batch.
She has worked with the CBI for five years.
According to some media reports, she has been one of the key choices fo the CBI director's post.
As per a Hindustan Times report, there are 11 officers who have worked in CBI earlier and belong to the top four IPS batches — 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985. This is the consideration set for the top job at CBI and Mitra is right on top on account of her seniority.
CBI, Alok Verma and his removal:
Supreme Court reinstated Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Alok Verma was removed this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-chaired committee amid several controversies and developments.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had on Jan 9 excused himself from a selection panel meeting on CBI director Alok Verma to decide on his continuation since he had himself delivered the verdict reinstating Verma as the CBI chief.
Earlier, the apex court's decision to reinstate him was seen as a setback to the Centre that had sent Verma on leave.
Verma’s tenure as CBI director ends on January 31.
The controversy in the CBI episode revolves around Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana swapping bribe charges.
