Declare condition in Kerala as national disaster: Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi

Mumbai, Aug 18 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the condition of flood-hit Kerala as 'a national disaster'.

"Dear PM, Increasing funds allocated for Kerala relief to Rs.500 Cr is a good step but nowhere near enough. It is critical you declare the floods as a National Disaster. Please do not vacillate as the people of Kerala are suffering. #KeralaFloodRelief," Gandhi tweeted.

Gandhi also urged people earlier to donate to the CM's relief fund for the state.

"I am deeply concerned for the people of #Kerala tonight, as the flood waters rise. Thousands are stranded. Relief camps full. Many have lost their loved ones. It’s time to step up & help. Please contribute generously to the CM’s relief fund. Use this link: https://donation.cmdrf.kerala.gov.in," he had tweeted.

Kerala has been badly hit by rain and flood-related incidents for the past few days.

Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued for 11 districts in the state.

"Red Alert issued for today in 11 districts. Heavy rainfall predicted for the day in all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam & Kasaragod,"CMO Kerala tweeted.
