Darjeeling unrest: GJM supporters allegedly attack police, snatch arms

Darjeeling, Jun 29 (IBNS): Police were allegedly attacked by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters in violence-hit Darjeeling on Thursday night, reports said.

According to reports, GJM activists attacked a police station at Rongli in Darjeeling's Tista Valley area.

Darjeeling is roiled by renewed agitation for a separate state of Gorkhaland.

"When policemen were about to go for a search operation to nab Morcha supporters involved in previous clashes, a large number of GJM supporters attacked our men," a senior police official told IBNS.

"They looted two firearms, including a revolver and an SLR (self-loaded rifle), from police while three police vehicles were ransacked and one of those were torched," the official added.

"Five police personnel were seriously injured in the sudden strike of GJM. Four of them were admitted to a local hospital at Takda while another has been shifted to a Siliguri hospital as his condition has deteriorated."

A heavy police force along with RAF and combat force have been deployed to the area to bring the situation under control, reports said.

"Our force is trying to reach the scene," a police official told IBNS.

No reaction has been received from GJM leaders yet.
