Currency note ban: Mamata Banerjee visits Burrabazar market

Kolkata, Nov 19 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday visited Burrabazar market in Kolkata and interacted with people over the situation following the banning of Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 currency notes by the Centre on Nov 8.

"Paid surprise visit to Asia’s biggest market, Burrabazar. Listened to problems of hawkers, traders, mazdoors, shopkeepers, commoners 1/4," Banerjee tweeted.

"All expressed deep anguish," she said.

The Chief Minister said: "All caste, community, creed spoke about their big problems they are facing. Belonging to all States, especially UP, Bihar, Punjab. They are saying, last 10 days, everything is down to almost zero. Very sad situation."

In unprecedented scenes, millions of people since Nov 10 morning thronged in front of banks across the country to deposit the now-invalid Rs. 500 and rs. 1000 notes.

The Government has asked the people to deposit their Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes in banks within a specific time frame and get smaller denominations in exchange.

It has also  announced that deposits above Rs. 2.5 lakh will be taxed and could draw a 200 per cent penalty if found disproportionately higher than the account owner's income.

The banks have been asked to keep the details of PAN card of people depositing such large amounts over the 50-day period till Dec 30

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee held a rally in the national capital on Thursday, demanding a rollback of the government's latest policy.
