Jaipur, Sep 9 (IBNS) : Curfew remained in force in five police station areas of Jaipur and tension continued to simmer after the clashes between police and the local people in the old city's Ramganj area on late on Friday in which one person was killed and 12 were injured, reports said.

Mobile internet services have been suspended in the walled city as a precautionary measure against recurrence of violence.

While a mob showered stones at  the police,  torched nearby vehicles and vandalized public property, the cops opened fire in retaliation after the use of tear gas and rubber bullets reportedly failed to control the situation.

The clashes were the result of  a "petty dispute" between a police constable and a motorcycle-borne couple.

According to media reports, locals alleged that the constable had assaulted the couple , following which hundreds of people gathered at a police station in the area  and started throwing stones.

The mob also set ablaze a transformer and several vehicles, including an ambulance.

The police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the mob, but when the situation went out of control, police had to open fire on the agitators in which one person was killed.
