Court extends former Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee's judicial custody for another two weeks
Kolkata: A city court here on Monday extended the existing jail custody for Bengal's former education minister Partha Chatterjee and six other present and former officials in the alleged scam in the state education department over recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff in the government-aided schools, court sources said.
The special CBI court at Alipore extended the judicial custody of Partha Chatterjee, North Bengal University vice-chancellor Subiresh Bhattacharya, and former SSC ( school service commission) officials Shanti Prasad Sinha, Kalyanmoy Ganguly, Ashoke Saha, Prasanna Roy and Pradip Singh.
The advocates appearing on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the court that the federal agency wanted to question them in custody to unravel the conspiracy of the recruitment scandal.
Chatterjee was physically produced before the CBI court in connection with the CBI's probe into the alleged recruitment scam in government-aided schools across the state.
Later in the day, he was virtually produced in the Bankshall court in connection with the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) money laundering probe in the same scam.
The ED arrested Chatterjee on July 23 along with his alleged close aide Arpita Mukherjee. The ED had unearthed Rs 50 crore from two flats of Mukherjee.
The next hearing is on November 28.
