Congress Working Committee meets to discuss OBC women's reservation; finalises strategy for upcoming polls

New Delhi/IBNS/UNI: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Monday said women's reservation, including extending reservation to OBC women, would be implemented if the party is voted to power in the Lok Sabha election in 2024.

During his address at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting which was convened here to finalise the party's strategy for the upcoming polls, Kharge said, “We have demanded a nationwide Caste-based Census which is crucial for effective government programmes and welfare schemes.”

The CWC meeting discussed various issues concerning the upcoming elections of five states assemblies - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram - and Lok Sabha in 2024. The election dates for the Assembly polls were announced earlier in the day.

Several issues such as the implementation of women's reservation, including a quota for OBC women, the Caste-based Census, and the Manipur violence were some important discussion points in the meeting.

“As we approach the upcoming assembly elections and general elections, it is important that the party works with meticulous coordination and complete discipline and unity,” said Kharge.

Highlighting the BJP-led government’s failures, Kharge told the workers, “We must expedite efforts to highlight government failures and raise concerns affecting the common people.”

Assuring that the issues of concern would be addressed, Kharge said, “In 2024, we must strive to establish a government that addresses grave challenges and caters to the marginalised, youth, women, farmers, and labourers. Simultaneously, we must address pressing issues like inflation and unemployment while remaining attuned to the people’s voices."

The elections in Mizoram will be held on November 7, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 23, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and 17 and Telangana on November 30.

The results of all the assembly elections will be declared on December 3.
