Congress to take out flag march across country on its foundation day, Rahul Gandhi in Assam tomorrow

New Delhi/UNI: Amid ongoing nationwide protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Congress will undertake a Flag March across the country on its foundation day on Saturday.

While former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be attended a rally in Guwahati in Assam, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also address party workers at Lucknow.

At AICC headquarters party interim president Sonia Gandhi will unfurl the party flag at 0930 hours on its 134th foundation day.

"In addition to the customary flag hoisting in the respective state capitals, the presidents of pradesh Congress committees will thereafter undertake Flag Marches carrying the message of 'Save Constitution - Save India'," party general secretary in-charge of organisation KC Venugopal said.

He said the party leaders and workers will also read the preamble of the Constitution in their respective languages at public meetings.

Stating the current atmosphere in the country in the context of controversial CAA-NRC protests, Mr Venugopal said the Congress will rise to every occasion when there is challenge to the Constitution of India and any effort to derail the country from its path of progress amidst historical unemployment and pall of economic gloom.

"In last few days there has been widespread protests in colleges, universities and prominent institutions across the country against government’s decision to implement NRC/CAA. Faced by this massive backlash, the Prime Minister and Home Minister have indulged in characteristic double speak, and are now attempting to covertly undertake the exercise through NPR", he charged.
He alleged that the protestors were attacked by police indiscriminately and there were cases of deaths due to police firing at many places.

"The government has put itself in a bind on these issues with the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Defence Minister making contradictory statements on different occasions. The CAA proposes to flout the guarantees of Article 14, in contravention of the Constitution of India," Vengugopal said.

Criticising the Modi government's decision to carry out the National Population Register (NPR), Venugopal said this has again raised heckles and suspicion "because of RSS-BJP’s long hidden agenda to implement NRC following completion of NPR exercise".
